Home Insulation

Home insulation is the most efficient way to regulate and normalize the temperatures inside your house. It allows you to reduce the loss of heat inside your home during winter and helps keep the indoor temperature cool during summer. It’s easier and more practical to install insulation when your house is still in the building phase or if you’re doing major renovations. However, don’t be concerned if your house is already finished. It’s not really an issue because home insulation can be retrofit in any existing property without it turning into a major construction project.

For those that do not fully understand why home insulation is so important, here’s a quick and basic explanation: the transfer of heat occurs in all materials, whether it’s wood, stone, concrete, metal, plastic, etc. The only difference between these materials is the amount of heat that passes through them. Your home will typically be constructed using common building materials like wood, plaster, drywall, masonry, glass, and metal. But no matter what materials are used to construct your home, you can be sure that heat will constantly be flowing in and out of the house.

Insulating your home means installing barriers that will block or reduce the amount of heat from transferring in or out of your property. This is highly important when you want to enjoy desirable temperatures inside no matter what the weather is outside. During summer, you want to keep the hot air from coming in. During winter, you will want to keep the hot air inside so your house will be warm. Home insulation, when installed properly, can provide a considerable barrier to heat that wants to either escape outside or get inside. That is the primary purpose of insulation and the biggest benefit it provides to homeowners.

Another big advantage of having home insulation is that it helps a lot in saving you money on your energy bills. This is because you won’t need to frequently turn on your heating or cooling units and keep them running just to enjoy a comfortable environment indoors. A fully insulated home (walls, floors, ceilings) allows homeowners to save as much as 40-50% on their heating/cooling bills every year. Most people who have installed insulation in their homes say that the savings on their energy bills in the first year alone make it worth the time and money. Home insulation will start saving you money the day you install it and can pay for itself in around five to six years.

We recommend that insulation be installed in homes during the construction phase, rather than wait until the house is finished. For a house that is still being built, the best areas to install insulation would be the external walls, the floors between different storeys, under the floor of the house (if the house is built from the ground up), and around the plumbing pipes. For an existing house, installing insulation on the ceilings, under the floor of the house (if it has space underneath), and around the plumbing pipes as well. For existing homes, you can also upgrade the insulation materials to that with higher R-values to improve the overall performance without having to do extensive retrofitting.
